About Course
Year 10 Stage 5 Mathematics – Full-Year Course
Our Year 10 Stage 5 Mathematics course is designed to build strong mathematical understanding, problem-solving skills and confidence across the key areas of the NSW Mathematics curriculum. The course provides a structured progression from core concepts to more advanced applications, helping students prepare effectively for senior mathematics and future study.
Throughout the year, students develop fluency in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, trigonometry, financial mathematics, statistics and probability. Lessons combine clear explanations, worked examples, guided practice and challenging problem-solving activities to help students understand not only how to solve a problem, but also why the method works.
Course Areas
-
Algebra, Indices & Surds – Develop fluency with algebraic manipulation, index laws, scientific notation and surds.
-
Equations & Algebraic Relationships – Solve linear equations, inequalities and simultaneous equations while applying algebra to real-world relationships.
-
Linear Relationships & Coordinate Geometry – Explore gradient, intercepts, linear equations, distance, midpoint and coordinate-based problem solving.
-
Quadratic & Non-Linear Relationships – Investigate quadratic patterns, expressions, parabolas, tables and graphs, and interpret key features of non-linear relationships.
-
Measurement, Geometry & Trigonometry – Apply measurement formulas, Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometric ratios to solve geometric and practical problems.
-
Financial Mathematics & Rates – Apply percentages, interest, wages, taxation, exchange rates and practical rates to financial decision-making.
-
Statistics, Probability & Data Relationships – Analyse data, investigate probability, explore relationships between variables and use statistical evidence to make predictions.
What Students Will Develop
By completing the full-year course, students will develop the ability to:
-
Apply mathematical concepts accurately across a wide range of topics.
-
Solve multi-step and unfamiliar problems using logical strategies.
-
Connect algebraic, numerical, graphical and geometric representations.
-
Interpret mathematical information in practical and real-world contexts.
-
Use appropriate formulas, techniques and mathematical language.
-
Analyse data and evaluate probability and statistical claims.
-
Communicate mathematical reasoning clearly and justify solutions.
-
Build the confidence and foundational knowledge required for senior secondary mathematics.
The course is structured to provide consistent practice, progressive difficulty and comprehensive coverage, ensuring students strengthen their foundations while developing the higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills expected at Year 10 level.
